Safari User Guide

To keep your surfing habits to yourself, Safari offers Private Browsing. Simply turn it on, and Safari stops keeping track of your web history, and storing your searches, cookies, and the data in any online forms you fill out. Greater control can be found in Safari's preferences. Pros: Free, fast, secure, multi-touch, support for CSS3 and HTML5. Change your default search engine: In the 'Preferences' window, select the 'Search' tab. Here you will find a drop-down menu labelled 'Search engine:' Simply select your preferred search engine from the drop-down list. If you continue to have problems with browser redirects and unwanted advertisements - Reset Safari.

Searching the web is a powerful way to find information, and in Safari you can choose which search engine you wish to use.

Choose a search engine

  1. In the Safari app on your Mac, delete all text in the Smart Search field.

  2. Click the magnifying glass to the left of the Smart Search field, then choose a search engine from the list.

When you search, you also give information about yourself to the search engine. For example, if you enter 'Golden Retriever' in the Smart Search field, the search engine learns that you're interested in information about Golden Retriever dogs, even if you don't press Return to submit the search terms. Search engines have different policies for what they do with search data they collect from you.

Prevent search engine suggestions

  1. In the Safari app on your Mac, choose Safari > Preferences, then click Search.

  2. Deselect 'Include search engine suggestions.'

Safari stops sending the search engine your partial search terms as you type them, and the search engine doesn't send Safari search suggestions to show in the results list below the search and address field.

I'd like Google search to be the default search engine when searching from Safari's address bar, however Safari on my iMac will search only Yahoo! Macbook pro small hard drive. regardless what the default browser is set to in the preference pane. Things I've tried:

  • Changing the default search engine from the preference pane to Google, Bing, Yahoo! and then back to Google
  • Quitting and restarting Safari after each change
  • Restarting my computer after changes

I guess this is a rather minor annoyance, but I really detest the look and feel of how Yahoo! presents search results, and I resent being forced to use their services.
